The town of Guatapé rebuilt itself after forced relocation in the 1960s, when the Colombian government flooded the Peñol-Guatapé valley to create a hydroelectric reservoir.
Residents relocated uphill and reimagined their architecture, covering every façade with hand-painted zócalos — bas-relief friezes depicting local trades, family histories, and Antioquian folklore. What began as a collective act of cultural preservation has become Colombia's most photographed streetscape, where over 300 buildings display intricate geometric and figurative panels in every primary color.
Today, Guatapé anchors a full-day circuit from Medellín that includes La Piedra del Peñol, the 740-step granite monolith rising 200 meters above the reservoir, and optional extensions to coffee fincas in the surrounding hills.
